- Prof. Dr. Tommaso Calarco Director of Institute for Quantum Control (PGI-8), Professor at the University of Cologne and at the University of Bologna Professional Summary: Director of the Peter Grünberg Institute for Quantum Control (PGI-8) at Forschungszentrum Jülich and Professor of Quantum Information at the Universities of Cologne and Bologna, Prof. Tommaso Calarco is a leading figure in quantum science and technology in Europe. He was among the first to apply optimal control methods to quantum computing and many-body systems, holding positions at the University of Ulm (where he directed two key institutes), the BEC Center in Trento, and previously conducting research in Innsbruck, NIST, and Harvard. Prof. Calarco authored the Quantum Manifesto that launched the European Commission’s Quantum Flagship, where he currently serves as Chair of the Quantum Community Network (QCN). He is Secretary of the Top-Level Advisory Board on Quantum Technologies, chaired by European Commission Vice President Henna Virkkunen, and a co-founder of the European Quantum Industry Consortium (QuIC). Prof. Tommaso Calarco is also the scientific delegate representing Italy in the G7 Working Group on Quantum Technologies, established under the Canadian Presidency since 2025.
