Biography

Dr. Bob Dirks is a quantum technology leader and co-founder of QuDef, a company focusing on the security of quantum systems themselves, dedicated to advancing quantum security and accelerating the responsible adoption of quantum technologies in society. Bob began his career in Applied Physics at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, specializing in High Energy and Particle Physics. He graduated in 2002 at NIKHEF (Amsterdam), followed by a PhD at CEA/Saclay and Université Paris VII, which he completed in 2006. His doctoral research on next-generation Cd(Zn)Te X- and gamma-ray detectors contributed to technologies now used in ESA’s Solar Orbiter mission. He continued in the space sector at SRON, working on cryogenic detector systems for major European missions such as Athena and SPICA. His early career also included selection as a finalist in the ESA astronaut program and participation in the International Space University program at NASA Ames. Since 2010, Bob has been active at TNO, where he serves as Senior System Architect in Quantum Technology. He has played a key role in shaping Europe’s quantum communication landscape, initiated and leading the Quantum Satcom Roadmap for a future global quantum internet. He has contributed to multiple flagship EU projects, including LaiQa, GEOQKD, SeQure, QOSAC, and HPEPS, and has advised the European Commission and EUSPA on quantum communication and security through his consultancy work. He is also involved in key international initiatives, including the EuroQCI Architecture working group and ESA’s ScyLight advisory activities. In June 2024, Bob co-founded QuDef together with Dr. Michal Krelina. At QuDef, he is responsible for overall strategy, business development, and external positioning, acting as a bridge between technology, market needs, and stakeholders. He is deeply engaged in product development, customer engagement, partnerships, and establishing QuDef’s presence within national and international quantum ecosystems. As the company grows, he focuses on international expansion, building high-performing teams, and establishing long-term partnerships, positioning QuDef as a key player in the evolving field of quantum security.
