Biography

Johannes Virkkunen is heading the Technology Investments Division as part of the Equity Investments Department at the European Investment Fund. His team's investment focus spans from pre-seed stage technology transfer funds to early stage venture funds and all the way to growth stage funds. The investee funds target innovative companies in various technology sectors including artificial intelligence, deep tech, digital infrastructure and other frontier technologies such as quantum. He began his career at EIF in 2007 as a legal advisor for fund transactions, transitioning into venture capital investments in 2012. Prior to joining EIF, Johannes practised law in Finland, bringing a strong foundation in regulatory and transactional expertise to his investment leadership. Johannes holds Master of Laws (LL.M.) degrees from the University of Helsinki and the University of Chicago, as well as an MBA from IE Business School in Spain. His multidisciplinary background enables him to bridge legal, financial, and technological domains, fostering innovation ecosystems across Europe.
