Information
- Biography
- Dr. Stefan Schmid is an Austrian physicist and industry executive whose career traces a compelling arc from fundamental quantum physics research into applied technology leadership, now culminating in a return to the quantum computing sector. He was born in 1982 in Schwaz, Austria, and currently resides in Radfeld. His academic training began with a Master's degree (Mag.rer.nat.) in Physics at the Universität Innsbruck from 2000 to 2006, during which he spent a year (2003–2004) conducting research at the University of California, Berkeley, in Prof. Dan Stamper-Kurn's AMO physics research group. He went on to complete a PhD (Dr.rer.nat.), split between the Institut für Experimentalphysik at Universität Innsbruck and the Institut für Quantenmaterie at Universität Ulm, with a thesis in AMO physics focused on ultracold quantum gases. His academic achievements were recognized in 2009 with a DOC scholarship from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). After completing his doctorate, he briefly continued in academia as a postdoctoral researcher at Universität Ulm in early 2012. Later that year, he transitioned into industry, joining Daniel Swarovski KG in Wattens, Austria, where he remained for nearly nine years. He began as Senior Project Manager for PVD Coating (2012–2017), advanced to Expert in PVD Development (2018–2020), and finally took on the role of Lead Strategic Projects (2020–2021), reflecting a steady progression toward higher-level strategic responsibility. In 2021, he moved to BE Semiconductor in Radfeld, entering the semiconductor industry as Technology Owner for Hybrid Bonding. Within two years, he was promoted to Global Hybrid Bonding Process Manager (2023–2024), overseeing this critical process area on a global scale. Since April 2024, Dr. Schmid has served as Co-Head of Technology Partnerships at Parity Quantum Computing in Innsbruck — a role that brings his career full circle, reconnecting his industrial and managerial expertise with the quantum physics field where his career began.
